Getting launched as a pop star

Mendes taught himself to play the guitar at an early age. He began posting videos of himself singing covers of songs such as Justin Bieber’s As Long As You Love Me and Adele’s Hometown Glory on Vine. American talent manager Andrew Gertler noticed his videos in 2013 and promptly flew him out to New York to meet with the record label Island Records. Mendes signed with Island Records in May 2014.

Mendes’ first single, Life of the Party, was released in June that year and debuted on the Billboard Top 25.

Finding success and fame in pop music

Music fans instantly fell in love with Mendes’ boyish charm and singing voice. He released his first studio LP Handwritten in 2015. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and sold over a million copies in the US.

In 2015, Mendes also received his first Juno Award nomination for Breakthrough Artist of the Year. In subsequent years, Mendes again had a string of hits, ranging from his hit 2016 single Treat You Better, which made the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the album Illuminate.
