Getting started with Vine
Before he found global stardom, Shawn Mendes used to post his covers of popular songs on the video streaming service Vine. American talent manager Andrew Gertler noticed his covers in 2013 and then got in touch with him. Mendes was subsequently flown out to New York to meet with the record label Island Records. Mendes signed with the label in May 2014.
Mendes’ first single, Life of the Party, was released that year. It debuted on the Billboard Top 25. Mendes had become a star almost overnight.
Emerging as a teen pop sensation
Shawn Mendes shared a lot in common with Justin Bieber, who also hails from Canada and was noticed by an American talent manager through his singing videos which his mother published on YouTube.
Mendes released his first studio LP Handwritten in 2015. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and sold more than a million copies in the United States alone.
In 2015, Mendes received his first Juno Award nomination for Breakthrough Artist of the Year. In the following years, Mendes released more songs that became instant hits, including his 2016 single Treat You Better, which reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the album Illuminate.
