The Music and Style Evolution of Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish began gathering large amounts of public attention when her song “Ocean Eyes” went viral on sound cloud in 2015. At the time, Eilish was just 13 years old, and the sudden media attention and tons of fans didn’t do her much good, both physically and mentally. She has made a name for herself as one of the most unique artists in the industry that doesn’t shy away from addressing darker themes like depression and suicide. But Eilish’s style has gone under significant change over the years, both in the kind of clothes she wears and the kind of music she produces. So, how exactly has it evolved?

Don’t Smile at Me

She released her debut album in 2017, and this album featured “Ocean Eyes, the song that initially made her blow up, and 8 other songs that she produced and wrote with her brother. While there was a lot of diversity in all the tracks, all of them had darker, more obsessive themes. This kind of self-reflection from a young girl was very jarring, especially when you look at the dark, grungy clothes she wore, almost as if trying to hide herself. You can get a good idea of her internal struggles by listening to songs like “Idontwannabeyouanymore.”

When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

Her second album was much darker and subtly shows her struggles with fame and media. The more sexual and crass lyrics, paired with EDM tracks, made all her tracks radio worthy. Her songs “I Love You” and “When the Party is Over” document her struggles as a teenager and as someone who feels immensely lonely and criticized. During this time, many media outlets objectified her body, despite her continuing to wear baggy clothes.

Happier Than Ever

This is one of her most recent albums and was just released in 2021. This album is quite different from the rest because Billie focuses more on lyricism and talks about themes like abusive relationships, media, and reclaiming the power over your body, among others. These themes are most prominent in songs like “Your Power,” “Lost Cause,” and “NDA.” This was also the time we started to see a completely different side of Billie as she started to wear more form-fitting and flesh-colored clothing, which was a direct callout to the haters and media who have continued to objectify her since before her debut.
