Chris Dave and the Drumhedz Album Review
Chris Dave is one of the most in-demand session drummers of his age, having worked with musicians like Adele, Robert Glasper Experiment, Justin Bieber, D’Angelo, and Thundercat, both live and in studio. He’s known for his distinct and widely recognized style.
This article will serve as a brief review of Chris Dave and Drumhedz’s self-titled album.
A Little Insight Into Album
The debut full-length album from drummer Chris “Daddy” Dave and his group of fantastic musicians known as the Drumhedz arrived on January 26, 2018 - and on Blue Note Records - with considerable anticipation.
Dave’s drumming is the album’s centerpiece, with synchronized beats and explosive touches, and the instrumental and vocal combinations are wonderful.
Universal Language and Destiny N Stereo have smooth grooves that instantly transport you back to the glory days of hip-hop in the 1990s.
Featuring Anderson. Paak, Clear View, and Cosmic Intercourse are two wonderful tracks that mix all kinds of genres together.
Other than the above, Tweet, Bilal, Phonté Coleman, and Eric Roberson have also contributed their skills to the album.
Playing with Multiple Beats
Musically, the album is excellent. The sound quality is excellent. Chris and the group blend Rock, Jazz-Funk, Soul, Rap, and Afrobeat seamlessly on the same Mixtape. However, the record is too well-balanced, almost to the point of repetition. It is devoid of individuality.
Stand Out Tracks
On the second track, “Universal Language,” Chris Dave’s signature, subtly shifted playing technique emerges, a P-Funk-esque song with a profusion of vocal ability. The basic ensemble’s collaboration with D’Angelo on his remarkable 2014 album Black Messiah is recalled on “Whatever,” a minimalist double jazz guitar track with hip hop beats. Tweet and Bilal give soulful vocals on “Spread Her Wings,” an RnB-tinged song.
Putting together such a large group of America’s present generation of world-class musicians carries the risk of them all attempting to outplay one another, resulting in a cosmic mess. On the other hand, Chris Dave and the Drumhedz establish that an intergalactic blending of musical realms can be presented with grace on their immensely pleasant self-titled debut.
