A Critical Review Into Ed Sheeran's Second Studio Album
On June 20, 2014, everyone's favorite singer, songwriter, guitar player, and rhyming pop star released his second studio album, 'x.' Ed's record is titled 'x,' which stands for 'multiply,' and comes after his UK number one first album '+.' Unlike '+,' which featured mostly acoustic ballads, 'X' intersperses its ballads with energetic rhythms and mid-tempo pieces. While Sheeran is recognized for his vocals and guitar, most of the tracks on 'X' have a full band, offering a whole different vibe.
Let's review one of the best of Ed Sheeran's albums.
A Full Musical Package
Throughout 'Multiply,' Sheeran offers the characteristics of a mature artist exploring new methods, an artist with a lot more to give than heartache songs or punchy hits. The album has everything, from tracks that get hooked in our minds, like "Thinking Out Loud," and a song that quickly enlightens the mood with "Sing, " a catchy beat that draws inspiration from 1970s funk and disco musicians.
Sheeran tells heartbreaking stories in songs like "Don't" and "Nina" while also highlighting his links to Hip-Hop and Rap and his pretty great rapping talents in "Take It Back" and "The Man."
Influences From Other Artists
Sheeran demonstrates that he has a broad range of inspirations in the album, paying tribute to former musicians while being true to himself.
There's the soulful "Thinking Out Loud," which sounds like a song of a John Mayer album, complete with a deep guitar solo. The Backstreet Boys and N'Sync influence "Runaway," while "Don't" is unlike Arctic Monkeys. In "The Man," he raps about road life like Eminem, and he does an impeccable job.
Most Personal Album
"Runaway" is about Ed's terrible past life as a young boy, which feels like a very personal album.
It gives the listener a closer look at Ed's personal affairs and Ed's connection with his father. This is yet another disco-influenced track that demonstrates Sheeran's flexibility on this album, as he offers relationship-related rhymes.
"Don't" has sparked a lot of speculation concerning the song's subject matter. Ed talks about a brief connection with a fellow artist who cheated on him and his hesitation to name the woman.
'X' Critical Acclaims
'X' was a financial success globally, topping both the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200. The first track, "Sing," earned Sheeran's first UK number-one hit peaked at number 13 in the US.
"Thinking Out Loud," the album's third song, gained international success, reaching number one. 'X' won British Album of the Year at the Brit Awards in 2015. With sales of over three million copies, 'X' has also been certified 12 Platinum in the United Kingdom.
